Sweden Deploys Military Officers to Support Denmark's Arctic Endurance Operation in Greenland

Sweden has begun sending military officers to Greenland as part of a collaborative effort supporting Denmark’s increased military presence and operations in the region. This deployment was announced on January 14, 2026, by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson via social media. The officers will join personnel from several allied countries in preparation for the Danish military exercise Operation Arctic Endurance.

The Swedish officers' primary role is to assess logistics capabilities for accommodating potential deployments of larger forces in the future. Their participation follows a request from Denmark, highlighting close cooperation between Sweden and Denmark in Arctic defense initiatives. According to Danish public broadcaster DR, the advance group will ensure the readiness to receive main forces during the operation.

Operation Arctic Endurance involves increased Danish military activity including aircraft, ships, and soldiers from Denmark’s domestic forces as well as NATO allies. The Danish government announced this increase in presence amid heightened geopolitical interest in Greenland, particularly after public claims by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding American control over the island.

In response, delegations from Denmark, Greenland, and the United States have met to discuss these claims, underscoring the strategic sensitivity of the Arctic region. Prime Minister Kristersson emphasized Sweden’s commitment by stating, “Some officers from the Swedish Armed Forces arrive today in Greenland as part of a group from several allied countries,” underscoring the multinational nature of the initiative.
