Sweden Deploys Gripen Fighter Jets to Strengthen NATO Air Defense in Poland

Sweden is contributing its JAS 39C Gripen fighter jets to a NATO operation in Poland aimed at reinforcing airspace security on NATO's eastern flank. This marks the second deployment of Swedish fighter aircraft to Poland, following a similar mission in spring 2025. The operation begins on October 1, 2026, and will last two months.

According to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, "By fully cooperating with our friends and allies in NATO, we strengthen Sweden's, Europe's, and NATO's security." He emphasized Sweden's commitment to collective defense in the region. Defense Minister Pål Jonson highlighted the serious security challenges in the area, pointing to recurring airspace violations by foreign actors, and underscored the need for heightened military readiness on NATO's eastern border. The deployment supports protection of critical arms deliveries to Ukraine transiting through Poland, which Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard described as a vital link in regional security.

The Swedish Gripen jets will operate in Polish airspace but will be based primarily in Sweden, with a smaller forward operating base established in Poland to facilitate the mission. The deployment involves personnel from the Blekinge Air Force Wing and reflects Sweden's increased role in European security amid ongoing regional tensions.
