Sweden Deploys Firefighting Aircraft to Aid Spain and France in Devastating 2026 Wildfires

Sweden is sending two firefighting planes to assist Spain and France amid the severe wildfires wreaking havoc in Southern Europe. Spain declared a national emergency following intense fires in regions like Villa del Prado, San Martin de Valdeiglesias, and Burgohondo, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents. Likewise, France is facing critical conditions, with residents being evacuated by boat due to blocked escape routes.

The deployment is part of the European Union's civil protection mechanism (ERCC), which has been activated to provide cross-border aid. Sweden's firefighting planes, managed by the Myndigheten för civilt försvar (MCF), are qualified for rescEU, a joint crisis management resource funded mainly by the EU. The Swedish aircraft are expected to be operational for seven to eight days, and preparations to send team leaders have already begun.

Other countries also responding to the crisis include Croatia, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed these international assistance efforts, noting the scale of the challenge with the largest forest fire on record near Madrid generating extensive destruction.

Jonas Klint, spokesperson for MCF, emphasized that while current wildfire conditions in Sweden remain stable, the readiness to support Southern Europe demonstrates solidarity through the EU mechanism. This multinational response highlights coordinated efforts to tackle escalating wildfire emergencies during the peak summer season of 2026.
