Sweden Democrats Suspend Katja Nyberg Amid Police Investigation

The Sweden Democrats (SD) have taken decisive action in response to the police investigation into their member Katja Nyberg. The party has requested Nyberg's removal from several key oversight councils, including the Security Police Oversight Council, the Police Oversight Council, and the Special Investigations Oversight Council. Additionally, her role in the Justice Committee has been paused. Henrik Vinge, SD’s justice policy spokesperson and chairman of the Justice Committee, confirmed the request, describing the allegations against Nyberg as "very serious" and "deeply immoral."

The police investigation into Nyberg is seen as damaging not only to her political career but also to the Sweden Democrats’ image, especially with upcoming elections. Vinge has publicly criticized her alleged offenses, condemning drunk driving as "deeply immoral" and endangering others, while also acknowledging the principle of innocence until proven guilty. The SD leadership has effectively placed Nyberg in an indefinite hiatus, complicating her potential return to politics regardless of the investigation’s outcome.

Initially, Nyberg was regarded as a valuable asset to the party due to her law enforcement background, but her current situation is now viewed as a liability. This move signals the party's effort to maintain a tough stance on crime, which aligns with the government's broader agenda to portray the coalition as firm on law and order.
