Sweden Democrats Politician Resigns After Intoxicated Assault Incident at Concert

A Sweden Democrats (SD) politician from Linköping has resigned from his municipal duties and withdrawn from the election campaign following charges of assaulting security guards during a December incident. The politician was removed from a concert at Saab arena due to severe intoxication. During the intervention, he allegedly resisted arrest and attacked three security guards by attempting to bite them on their hands, arms, and legs.

According to the guards, the politician also threatened them by invoking his political influence. Police took the politician into custody for intoxication, where he spent the night at a police station. The incident has led to a preliminary investigation, and he now faces legal charges for assault.

Despite denying the charges and claiming to have no memory of the events, the politician informed the Sweden Democrats of his resignation, citing personal reasons. Jörgen Ring, the SD group leader in Linköping municipality, stated that had the politician not stepped down voluntarily, he would have been expelled from the party.

The politician holds multiple roles within the party at the municipal level, serving on the municipal council and acting as a substitute in a municipal committee. Additionally, he was a candidate for both municipal and regional councils in the recent autumn elections but has now withdrawn from those campaigns.

This event highlights challenges of political accountability within the Sweden Democrats as the party swiftly responded to the allegations by encouraging the politician's resignation and threatening expulsion. The legal process will continue to determine the outcome of the assault charges against the politician.
