Sweden Democrats Politician Göran Hargestam Resigns After Nazi Memorabilia Revelation

Göran Hargestam, a Sweden Democrats (SD) politician and former chairman of SD in Östergötland, has resigned from his parliamentary seat following the discovery of a collection of Nazi memorabilia linked to him. The items were found in boxes left behind after the sale of his former office, including two copies of Adolf Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' from the 1930s and 1940s, a 1941 German Air Force trophy boasting a swastika and eagle, and a photo album glorifying Hitler's dictatorship.

Hargestam explained that his interest in these items stemmed from military history rather than any ideological sympathy, emphasizing his intention to write a book on totalitarian regimes. Despite his insistence that he has “clean hands” and distancing himself from Nazism, the exposure of the collection sparked significant political backlash and public criticism.

The Sweden Democrats expressed respect for Hargestam’s decision to step down, acknowledging that owning such memorabilia was problematic. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats, represented by justice policy spokesperson Teresa Carvalho, viewed the discovery as part of a troubling pattern within the SD party. Carvalho urged Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to publicly condemn the behavior, warning that silence risks normalizing extremist affiliations.

The investigation that uncovered the memorabilia was related to a property sale connected to Hargestam, intensifying scrutiny over the politician’s past interests. Although Hargestam claimed the artifacts were easier to obtain from Germany than Russia, the political fallout was immediate, with his resignation marking the culmination of the controversy.
