Sweden Democrats' Gustav Gellerbrant Responds to Allegations of Russian Influence Amid Calls for Action

Sweden Democrats (SD) official Gustav Gellerbrant has publicly addressed allegations that his partner has ties to Russian networks and has spread pro-Russian propaganda. The accusations, brought to light by investigative reports, have stirred political controversy and a demand for accountability within the party and government.

Gellerbrant, who leads the SD coordination office and acts as close aide to party leader Jimmie Åkesson, dismissed the claims as "disjointed information" aimed at discrediting his partner due to her Russian heritage. He emphasized that some implicated social media posts were old, using irony or sarcasm, and highlighted her vocal criticism of Russia, notably describing February 24, 2022, as "the worst day of her life." He condemned the media coverage as a "witch hunt" that caused severe stress on his family, leading him to take immediate parental leave and return his government access card and computer.

The partner, a political secretary for SD since 2024, was reportedly involved in a Kremlin-sponsored trip and events linked to Russian state entities, although Gellerbrant noted she had little choice in attending as a new employee. He confirmed cooperation with European authorities but refrained from sharing further details.

Opposition parties, especially the Social Democrats, have called for suspensions of both Gellerbrant and his partner. Peter Hultqvist, a Social Democrat, demanded their removal, citing security concerns. Despite the serious allegations, party leader Åkesson downplayed the situation, stating that if there were a security crisis, authorities would have already intervened. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stressed that if the allegations prove true, the Sweden Democrats must ensure the individual is removed from their position.

Regarding the security process, the Sweden Democrats have stated that both individuals underwent security clearances, which Gabriel Wernstedt from the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) said is the responsibility of the employer. Wernstedt acknowledged that foreign connections can constitute vulnerabilities needing careful consideration.

As the investigation proceeds, Gellerbrant remains on parental leave, and the debate over foreign influence within Swedish political ranks highlights heightened vigilance against potential security threats.
