Sweden Democrats Face Scandals Amid 2026 Election Campaign

Two separate controversies involving Sweden Democrats (SD) politicians have emerged in early May 2026, raising questions about the party's discipline and internal oversight just ahead of the general election.

In Stockholm, an SD politician was convicted of purchasing sexual services from a Thai massage parlor and had even used his wellness allowance to cover payments there. Despite this conviction, he successfully passed the party's vetting process and remained on the party's candidate list for the upcoming election. The group's leader acknowledged this as an internal control failure within the party, highlighting weaknesses in their candidate screening procedures.

Meanwhile, in Tingsryd, Martin Nord, an SD politician, sparked backlash for a social media post comparing Social Democratic leader and Sweden's first female prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, to a sex doll. Magnus Carlberg, chair of the local Social Democrats, condemned the post as sexist, inappropriate, and damaging to the political climate, emphasizing the importance of respectful political dialogue. Despite the criticism, Pernilla Wikelund, chair of the Sweden Democrats in Växjö, stated that the matter had been swiftly addressed as a closed incident at the local level and dismissed fears about reputational harm. Ann-Louise Viking, chair of SD in Tingsryd, declined further comment.

Carlberg noted that the incident would not impact inter-party relations in Tingsryd, where no cooperation is planned due to fundamental disagreement with SD’s ideology. He stressed that fostering a respectful environment is crucial for encouraging wider political participation.

These incidents highlight ongoing challenges for the Sweden Democrats regarding ethical conduct and party image as they approach a critical election cycle.
