Sweden Condemns Russian Hybrid Threats After Explosives-Laden Drone Incident Near Leipzig

In response to a recent explosives-laden drone incident near Leipzig/Halle airport in Germany, Sweden has taken decisive diplomatic and security measures against Russia. The drone, discovered on August 4 near a Ukrainian cargo plane at the military transport hub, was attributed to Russian hybrid attacks by German authorities.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized the severe dangers the sabotage posed, noting it could have had devastating consequences for human lives and European air traffic. Following Germany's formal accusation of Russia and its decision to close the Russian consulate in Bonn and tighten diplomatic presence, Sweden fully supported these actions and summoned the Russian ambassador to express a strong protest.

Kristersson linked the increased hybrid threats to Russia's faltering war efforts in Ukraine and economic difficulties, warning that the aggressiveness could manifest in any country supporting Ukraine. To address the evolving security challenges, he announced an emergency meeting of Sweden's National Security Council and confirmed that the Swedish Armed Forces and Security Police would provide updates on the national security situation.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer highlighted ongoing government analyses of various Russian threats, including suspicious activities by Russian embassy personnel in Sweden. Defense Minister Pål Jonson affirmed Sweden's robust defense capabilities and warned that without clear responses, Russia would persist in escalating hybrid attacks. He clarified that NATO's Article 5 is currently not applicable as Germany has described the incident as a hybrid attack rather than a state of war.

Regarding concerns about Russian meddling in Swedish elections, Prime Minister Kristersson stated there is no evidence of interference, possibly due to Sweden's strong bipartisan support for Ukraine.
