Sweden Boosts Humanitarian Aid to Gaza with 50 Million Kronor for Children’s Relief

In a significant humanitarian move, the Swedish government has announced an additional 50 million kronor in aid to Gaza, reinforcing its position as Europe’s largest donor to the region. This fresh contribution is dedicated to meeting the urgent needs of children and young people suffering amidst severe winter conditions and a devastated infrastructure.

The funds, directed through UNICEF, aim to provide life-saving resources such as tents, bedding, food, clean water, warm clothing, and to establish temporary educational and recreational facilities for children. This approach ensures direct assistance to the most vulnerable populations, including those at risk of respiratory diseases caused by the cold and rain.

Benjamin Dousa, Sweden’s Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, highlighted the dire situation for Gaza’s youth, noting that about 97% of schools are destroyed or severely damaged, leaving countless children without formal education. The Swedish government’s decision to channel aid through UNICEF follows concerns over the neutrality and resource handling within other agencies such as UNRWA.

This recent allocation is part of a larger humanitarian package of 800 million kronor designated for Gaza in 2025, with 750 million already disbursed earlier this year. Dousa criticized other nations for not following through on their financial commitments but reaffirmed Sweden's commitment to supporting Gaza’s recovery and the welfare of its children.

By focusing on these essential interventions, Sweden aims to alleviate immediate suffering and contribute to rebuilding critical social infrastructure in Gaza under harsh winter conditions. The government’s continued generosity underscores its leadership role in humanitarian support within Europe.
