Sweden and USA Forge Strategic Bilateral Technology Cooperation Agreement

On May 22, 2026, Sweden and the United States signed a bilateral technology cooperation agreement known as the Technology Prosperity Deal during a NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Helsingborg. Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio formalized the political declaration aimed at deepening collaboration across key sectors including artificial intelligence (AI), connectivity, biomedicine, energy, space, quantum technology, advanced manufacturing, and defense innovation.

The agreement is designed to capitalize on the complementary technological strengths of both nations to enhance market access, business cooperation, and research exchange without imposing legal or economic obligations. Minister Stenergard underscored the importance of the deal in strengthening Sweden’s global competitiveness and supporting national business interests, noting Sweden's status as one of the world’s most innovative countries. The U.S. has previously established similar partnerships with countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, and South Korea.

Negotiations followed the signing to refine the details of the non-binding agreement, ensuring alignment with EU regulations and Sweden’s commitments as an EU member. Both nations seek to mutually benefit from improved access to cutting-edge technologies while excluding proposals that did not serve Sweden's interests.
