Sweden Advances Preventive Health with ERGO-Werlabs Partnership and New Syringe Exchange Clinic

Sweden is witnessing significant strides in preventive health with two major developments announced this week. ERGO Försäkring has partnered with healthcare provider Werlabs to integrate proactive health initiatives into insurance offerings, while Region Västerbotten is set to open a syringe exchange clinic at Skellefteå Hospital on September 28, 2026.

The ERGO-Werlabs collaboration focuses on shifting from reactive to preventive health management. Employers with ERGO's health insurance through SPP can now offer employees comprehensive health checks that include blood tests, assessments of cardiovascular health, blood sugar, and lifestyle habits such as physical activity and stress. Each participant receives a personalized medical assessment in a digital journal, with employers only accessing aggregated anonymized reports to guide workplace health strategies. Andreas Sandin, ERGO's Sweden manager, emphasized, “A modern health insurance should not only provide support when illness occurs but also create conditions for individuals to maintain and enhance their health.” Werlabs CEO Henrik Forsberg highlighted that integrating preventive health into insurance solutions is an emerging trend, with Werlabs serving over 400,000 individuals through accredited labs across Sweden. Follow-up data shows 62% of participants improved at least one health metric after testing.

Simultaneously, to address public health challenges linked to drug use, a syringe exchange clinic will commence operations at Skellefteå Hospital, eliminating the need for residents to travel to Umeå for services. Infectious disease physician Jonas Stenberg outlined the clinic’s goal to reduce bloodborne infections such as HIV and hepatitis B and C. Beyond providing clean syringes, the clinic will offer vaccinations, wound care, and motivational counseling for substance use treatment. Additional services include contraceptive advice and cervical sampling by a midwife on Mondays, with collaboration from local addiction units to ensure rapid access to psychiatric care and opioid dependence treatment.

Together, these initiatives underscore Sweden’s commitment to enhancing public health by investing in prevention, facilitating access to healthcare, and supporting sustainable well-being across populations.
