Sverigedemokraterna Faces Significant Votes Decline and Strategic Negotiations Post-Election

Sverigedemokraterna (SD) experienced a notable decline in the recent Swedish elections, losing ground in 285 out of 290 municipalities and dropping 3 percentage points to secure 17.5% of the votes. Party leader Jimmie Åkesson attributed the loss to voters favoring the Tidö coalition over the party itself. Political scientist Andreas Johansson Heinö characterized the drop as unexpectedly large, especially as the governing parties gained support. The decline was particularly stark among young voters, where SD's share in school elections fell by 7 points to 13.8%. The party also faced a considerable loss in Örebro in the regional elections, with SD falling from 14.6% to 8.9%, while the local Örebropartiet surged by 11.1 points to 15.5%. In response, SD is initiating negotiations with Örebropartiet and centre-right parties to challenge the century-long Social Democratic dominance in the region. Concurrently, SD's leadership convened to discuss election outcomes, focusing on potential new agreements with the Moderaterna party, especially regarding how to handle Moderaterna's proposed budget aimed at unseating Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson. These talks could be crucial for SD's strategic positioning following their electoral setbacks.
