In 2024, Sweden has witnessed a notable uptick in new business startups, rising from approximately 65,000 in 2023 to over 70,000, according to data from Tillväxtanalys. This surge reflects a growing optimism among entrepreneurs about the future, as emphasized by Jimmy Mannung, press chief of Företagarna, who remarked that this increase signifies an enhanced faith in business opportunities ahead.
The peak year for new startups was during the pandemic in 2021, when over 78,000 businesses were established; however, the number had been declining until this recent renewal in 2024. The predominant sectors for these new businesses include retail, legal, and financial consulting services, indicating a shift towards service-oriented enterprises.
Despite these positive developments, many entrepreneurs face significant challenges in obtaining financing. Reports show that only about 4% of total bank lending goes to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with many small business owners struggling to get necessary loans. Although recent interest rate cuts have slightly improved loan accessibility, the overall environment remains challenging. Mannung has urged banks to reassess their lending practices to foster growth within the small business sector, where many entrepreneurs still rely on personal assets to secure funding, a practice he warns against due to its inherent risks.
