Storm Johannes Leaves Thousands in Northern Sweden Without Power and Water

Storm Johannes has caused widespread power outages across northern Sweden, with thousands of households still struggling without electricity and water days after the storm hit. In Gävleborgs län, nearly 10,000 households remain without power, as reported by Ellevio. The storm severely damaged power lines and water infrastructure, leaving residents like Bengt Törnblom in Kilafors without both water and electricity. Törnblom expressed concern over the prolonged outages, stating, "It can take a long time before this is fixed." Meanwhile, in Västernorrland, the energy company Eon reported thousands of customers without power, estimating that some may have to wait until Monday or longer to have electricity restored.

Local municipalities have responded by establishing safety points, such as the one at Johannesgården in Ovanåkers, where residents can charge devices, warm up, and access hot drinks. Michael Lindberg, safety manager for Ovanåkers municipality, highlighted the urgent need to restore electricity, heating, and communication services, especially for rural residents heavily impacted by the outages. While some areas like Alfta and Edsbyn have retained power, the impact remains severe in less urban regions. Lena Berglund, regional manager for Norrland at Eon, acknowledged the unpredictability of restoration timelines due to the extensive damage.

The situation remains challenging as people cope with limited access to essential utilities amid harsh winter conditions, underscoring the storm's significant disruption to daily life in affected communities.
