Storm Johannes Brings Severe Weather Warnings Across Sweden

Storm Johannes is currently impacting Sweden with extensive severe weather warnings issued by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). On December 27, large parts of Norrland, northern Dalarna, and northeastern Svealand are under an orange warning due to a combination of strong winds, heavy snowfall, icy conditions, and reduced visibility.

The worst weather conditions are expected in Norrbotten and parts of the mountainous regions in Västerbotten. From midnight until 23:00, fjäll areas of Norrbotten and a small part of northwestern Västerbotten are forecasted to experience strong winds and snowfall. Similarly, the western regions of Jämtlands, Dalarna, and Västerbotten counties face orange warnings from 02:00 to 23:00.

In addition to inland warnings, a storm warning has been declared for the Southern Botten Sea and Åland Sea, which will be in effect from 06:00 on December 27 until 10:00 on December 28. Yellow warnings for strong winds and sudden ice slicks are also active in parts of northern Norrland, Uppland, and Gotland, as well as in eastern and northern areas of Norrbottens län, with ice slick warnings from late December 26 to early December 27.

Authorities have cautioned residents about hazardous travel conditions stemming from the storm's impact. SMHI highlights "very windy weather with storm gusts" and warns of the "combination of strong winds and heavy snowfall" that could lead to difficult and dangerous conditions across the affected regions. The warnings emphasize the heightened risks of severe weather-related disruptions, including travel cancellations and safety hazards.
