Storm Dave Sweeps Across Sweden Causing Power Outages, Transport Disruptions, and Structural Damage

On Easter Sunday, Storm Dave, originating from Britain, swept across Sweden, causing significant disruption and infrastructural damage. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issued an orange weather warning, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors due to strong winds reaching speeds up to 39.8 meters per second in places like Lysekil.

The storm resulted in widespread power outages affecting approximately 30,000 to 31,000 customers, mainly in western and southern Sweden. Restoration efforts were challenged by the harsh weather, with some households, especially in Kronoberg, expected to wait until Tuesday for electricity to be restored.

Transport services were heavily impacted. Train operations faced cancellations and delays, notably on routes between Stockholm and Gothenburg and Göteborg to Malmö, with some services replaced by buses. Ferry operations also suffered; a Gotland ferry carrying about 800 passengers was forced to turn back near Oskarshamn due to unsafe conditions caused by winds of around 30 meters per second.

Emergency services responded to numerous incidents involving fallen trees, fires, and property damage. In Uddevalla, parts of a building's facade collapsed, prompting safety concerns over further collapses. Residents described the incident as explosive. Emergency teams handled approximately 160 weather-related events in the Greater Gothenburg area alone. Fortunately, there were no widespread reports of serious injuries, though at least one person was injured by a falling tree in Vetlanda.

Local authorities in Skåne worked to clear roads blocked by fallen trees while managing high water levels along the coast. Several flights at Landvetter Airport faced cancellations or delays due to strong winds, further compounding travel disruptions.

As repair and recovery efforts continue, officials urge caution given the persistent risks from the storm's aftermath. While the worst may have passed, some regions remain on alert, monitoring ongoing infrastructure and safety concerns arising from Storm Dave's impact.
