Key details
Stockholm is set to implement a groundbreaking child health program at the preschool level, marking the first initiative of its kind in Sweden. The proposal, which will be presented to the municipal council this autumn, emphasizes preventive health measures before children start school. According to Alexandra Mattsson, the preschool councilor, the program aims to ensure equal health standards across the city's preschools amid the involvement of eleven different authorities.
Central to this program is the establishment of child health teams, similar to student health teams, which will include special educators, social workers, and psychologists. These teams are designed to assist preschool staff in addressing children's well-being and adapting environments for those needing special support. The program's focus areas encompass physical health through increased activity and access to nutritious meals; psychosocial health; safety in the learning environment; and collaboration with regional healthcare and social services.
Currently under review by municipal departments, the proposal includes plans for a digital support platform for preschool staff if approved. The initiative signifies a major step towards integrating preventive healthcare into early childhood education, reflecting a broader shift in addressing children's health needs proactively.
