Stockholm Closes 10,000 Snow Removal Complaints Amid January Snowstorm Chaos

Amid the severe January 2026 snowstorm, Stockholm City has faced a flood of complaints about inadequate snow removal. In response, municipal authorities decided to close approximately 10,000 complaint cases related to snow clearing. This drastic move was driven by overwhelming demand exceeding the city's resources to address issues through its usual procedures.

According to Ola Bjärle, head of Stockholm's traffic office, staff were instructed via email to consider complaints older than one day as resolved and outdated, allowing their closure. Remarkably, a single employee closed 3,600 cases within just two days. Employees were also advised not to answer phone calls about snow removal complaints to manage the volume.

This systemic closure practice has raised concerns as residents sought help during the snow chaos but found their grievances quickly dismissed. Stockholm City’s approach illustrates the immense challenges faced by municipal services in coping with extreme weather conditions and citizen demands simultaneously.

These developments come as heavy snowfall also impacted other parts of Sweden, including Skåne, where authorities issued severe weather warnings. However, the bulk of complaints and administrative hurdles were concentrated in Stockholm.
