Social Democrats Propose Doubling Child Benefits Ahead of Holidays to Ease Family Costs

The Swedish Social Democrats have announced a significant proposal to double child and study allowances before the upcoming Christmas and summer holidays in 2026. Led by party leader Magdalena Andersson and economic spokesperson Mikael Damberg, the plan aims to provide families with extra financial support to help manage rising living costs.

Currently, the child allowance is 1,250 kronor and has not been increased since 2018. Under the new proposal, families with two children could receive an additional 5,000 kronor annually, distributed as extra payments twice a year — once in December before the Christmas break, and again in June preceding the summer vacation.

The leaders emphasized the difficult economic climate Swedish families are facing, with increased food prices, rising rents, and higher mortgage payments putting strain on household budgets. Andersson highlighted that the additional funds could help families afford activities like amusement park visits and football camps for their children.

This initiative is not just a temporary relief; the Social Democrats are pushing for the doubled child benefit to become a permanent measure. Andersson underlined the importance of ensuring that children do not suffer the consequences of economic crises, pointing out that other Nordic countries have already raised child allowances during challenging financial times.

By addressing the direct needs of families during critical holiday periods, the Social Democrats aim to offer substantial economic support and uphold children’s welfare as a priority in Sweden’s social policy.
