Social Democrats Face Historic Decline Ahead of Sweden's 2026 Election

The Swedish Social Democrats have experienced a significant drop in support according to the latest Novus opinion poll, a scenario described by experts as both alarming and rare. The party's backing plummeted by over 4 percentage points, landing at 25.8%, marking perhaps their worst polling figures in history as they approach the September 2, 2026 election. Political scientist Jonas Hinnfors characterized this sharp downturn as "extremely unusual" for a single polling measurement, noting such drastic shifts typically result from significant events. Despite this, he highlighted that the Social Democrats have displayed a gradual decline throughout the year but historically tend to recover some ground as elections near.

Party Secretary Tobias Baudin described the decline as a "warning bell," cautioning that the election outcome remains uncertain despite prior expectations of a political shift favoring Social Democrats' leader Magdalena Andersson. This poll indicates the opposition’s lead is narrowing to just 2.6 percentage points, underscoring an increasingly competitive electoral landscape.

Other parties are capitalizing on this momentum. The Liberals have seen their support rise by 1.4 points to 3.3%, nearing the parliamentary threshold. Leader Simona Mohamsson acknowledged the modest gains, attributing them to growing public approval of their educational policies. Concurrently, the Left Party and Center Party also experienced growth, reaching 8.4% and 8.3%, respectively. Meanwhile, the Sweden Democrats increased their support to 20.7%, while the Moderates declined to just over 17%. Sverigedemokraterna’s rising influence is reflected in their integration into political dialogues with the Tidö parties, according to party secretary Mattias Bäckström Johansson.

Political analysts express concerns about the potential fallout for Magdalena Andersson’s leadership and the Social Democrats’ grip on the premiership. The Liberals, on the other hand, are optimistic about their upward trajectory amid the shifting political tides. Jimmie Åkesson of the Sweden Democrats emphasized the critical importance for the Liberals to surpass the 3.5% vote threshold to avoid wasted votes in the upcoming election.
