Social Democratic Politicians Resign Amid Controversy Over Dementia Patient's House Sale in Åsele

Two Social Democratic politicians in Åsele have stepped down following a controversial house sale involving a woman suffering from dementia. The core of the scandal centers on Andreas From, a former municipal councilor, who purchased the property without listing it on the open market. The transaction notably excluded the woman’s son, who was not consulted, raising serious concerns about the legitimacy and ethics of the sale.

The southern Lapland guardianship committee had approved the sale, but this decision drew sharp criticism from the County Administrative Board (Länsstyrelsen). The board has faulted the guardianship committee and highlighted a significant conflict of interest related to the approval process.

Gunnel Jonsson, also a Social Democrat and a member of the overförmyndarnämnden (guardianship committee), resigned from her position following the controversy. Authorities indicated intentions to dismiss her due to her failure to declare a conflict of interest while participating in the committee’s decision regarding the sale to From, a fellow party member. Jonsson’s resignation is a direct response to these accusations.

Despite having resigned from his municipal councilor post earlier in March, Andreas From maintains that his actions were appropriate. However, the fallout from the situation continues to reverberate as the community and officials examine governance and ethical conduct in political decisions.
