Social Democrat Jonas Attenius Threatened During Gothenburg Campaign Event

Jonas Attenius, chairman of Gothenburg's municipal council and a key Social Democratic figure, faced a threatening encounter while filming a campaign video in Majorna, Gothenburg. A man approached him, shouting insults including "traitor" and threatening to drown him. Attenius recalled the incident as frightening, stating it was the first time he felt that "now it’s going to happen, now it’s over." Authorities were alerted, and a 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making threats.

The attack occurred after a controversial video surfaced on social media depicting Attenius alongside a woman wearing a hijab. This video was shared by Sweden Democrats politician Richard Jomshof, who condemned the Social Democrats, calling their actions "treachery in its purest form." While Attenius said Jomshof isn’t personally responsible for the threats, he holds accountability for fostering the country’s tense atmosphere.

The incident drew national attention, with Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson commenting during a live TV debate on the harmful impact of political rhetoric on societal conduct. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also condemned the threats as "horrific," underscoring the need to uphold civil discourse as foundational to Swedish democracy.

Police had advised Attenius and his team to lock themselves in their car for safety before the man was apprehended. This alarming episode highlights the volatile environment surrounding the election campaign and concerns about the tone of political dialogue in Sweden.
