SKF Launches AI Smart Maintenance to Boost Manufacturing Efficiency and Sustainability

Swedish technology leader SKF has introduced AI Smart Maintenance, a cutting-edge solution designed to significantly reduce machine downtime and enhance manufacturing efficiency through the use of generative AI. The system assists technicians by translating technical manuals into local languages and providing clear, step-by-step guidance for repairs, reducing the average time spent searching and interpreting manuals from over 12 minutes to just 90 seconds. This innovation not only minimizes operational delays but also improves productivity and lowers costs.

Ricardo Murer, head of SKF's AI transformation, highlights that the goal extends beyond machine repairs to ensuring every second of operation contributes to energy savings. According to Murer, AI Smart Maintenance embodies a new standard in manufacturing uptime through real-time diagnostics and predictive support.

The AI solution was developed collaboratively with maintenance managers and technicians to ensure practical applicability. It is accessible either through a web interface or via Microsoft Teams, providing instructions tailored to the technician’s context and specific machine issues. Capgemini played a vital role in refining the technical aspects of the solution, including language model integration and data flow management.
