Significant Earthquake in Gällivare on Christmas Day Linked to Mining Activity

On December 25, 2025, a strong earthquake struck Gällivare, northern Sweden, causing notable shaking felt by local residents. LKAB, the mining company involved, reported the quake measured at 2.7 on their scale, while Uppsala University's seismic network recorded it at a higher magnitude of 3.2. The tremor occurred at 13:58 and was preceded by a smaller seismic event earlier that day with a magnitude of 1.49.

Residents like Tim, who lives about a kilometer from the epicenter, described the earthquake as significant, with dishes and glasses rattling in their homes. LKAB press officer Ulrika Huhtaniska stated this was one of the largest vibrations or subsidence events recorded by the company. The earthquake took place in a hanging wall area known as Gunilla hängvägg, but critically, mine operations, roads, and infrastructure were not affected.

In response, LKAB temporarily halted work at the affected hanging wall to allow the ground to stabilize and has initiated an investigation into the earthquake’s cause. The company emphasized that no personnel were in the immediate vicinity at the time of the tremor, ensuring safety.
