Sharp Rise in Violence and Threats in Swedish Schools Marks Alarming Trend in 2026

Sweden is witnessing a troubling increase in violence and threats within its schools. The trend culminated in a deadly incident on August 21 at Brinellskolan in Fagersta, where 18-year-old Liam Nebel launched a sword attack, resulting in the death of a 17-year-old girl and serious injuries to three boys.

Following this tragedy, authorities have recorded a surge in reports of violence and threats across Swedish schools. In 2025, there were 1,265 such reports to Arbetsmiljöverket, nearly double the 638 reports filed in 2016. This year alone has seen 800 reports so far, with municipalities like Malmö and Norrköping leading in incident counts—Malmö logging over 600 in the last decade. The rise in cases is partly attributed to changes in reporting practices, but the prevalence of violence remains a serious workplace safety concern.

Researcher Ilse Hakvoort from the University of Gothenburg highlighted that while the situation varies across schools, contributing factors include disruptive students, school mergers, and limited resources. The police and municipalities, including Fagersta, have responded with heightened vigilance and increased reporting following the recent armed attack.

Adding to the safety concerns in educational environments, Järfälla municipality northwest of Stockholm is grappling with a separate incident involving a serious sexual assault outdoors last Thursday. A suspect, whose identity remains confidential due to court protection rules, has been arrested and is being held on suspicion of the crime. In response, Järfälla authorities have advised parents to escort children to and from school and emphasized the increased alertness of schools in managing children's safety and concerns.

These incidents collectively spotlight urgent challenges in maintaining a safe and secure environment for Swedish schoolchildren amid rising violence and threats.
