Severe Weather Hits Southern Sweden with Orange Rainfall Warning and Rare Twin Tornadoes

Southern Sweden is currently experiencing severe weather warnings as intense rains and rare meteorological events affect the region. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued an orange warning for heavy rainfall in eastern Östergötland on Saturday, valid until 21:00, with additional yellow warnings for other parts of southern Sweden lasting into late evening. This orange alert represents the second highest level, signaling significant risk of flooding, traffic disruptions, and societal impacts.

Emergency services across Östergötland are on high alert. Lennart Ågren from the Östra Götaland rescue service expects a surge in emergency calls due to the intense rainfall over a short period. He highlighted that dry and hardened ground following recent warm weather exacerbates flooding concerns, as water absorption is limited. Ågren urged residents to ensure their drainage systems are clear and to exercise caution when driving to avoid water-related accidents during this busy summer period. Several flooding reports have already emerged from Norrköping and Valdemarsvik, prompting rapid response from emergency teams.

Along the west coast, the severe weather has led to flooding, power outages, and multiple fires, demonstrating the widespread impact of these conditions across southern Sweden.

Adding to the unusual weather events, a rare twin tornado occurrence was observed near Grästorp in Västra Götaland. Local resident Martina Karlsson reported witnessing two tornadoes simultaneously outside her window, describing the sight as "incredible." SVT meteorologist Henrik Reimer confirmed that while seeing one tornado is uncommon, witnessing two at once is particularly rare but feasible given the current weather dynamics. This phenomenon occurred amid a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in the region.

SMHI's forecasts predict further heavy rains, with accumulations possibly reaching 60-80 millimeters, especially concentrated in Östergötland. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, advising residents to relocate valuables at risk of water damage and avoid driving through flooded areas.
