Severe Snowstorm to Hit Sweden Over New Year’s Weekend, Up to Half a Meter of Snow Expected

Sweden is bracing for a significant snowstorm over the New Year’s weekend, with forecasts predicting heavy snowfall and strong winds, particularly across southern Norrland. Meteorologist Mattias Lind from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) warns that the snowfall could reach as much as half a meter in some locations, creating hazardous road conditions throughout the first days of January.

The snow event will begin on New Year’s Eve with lighter snowfall moving through Jämtland towards eastern Svealand, Öland, and Gotland. However, the more severe snowstorm is anticipated on New Year’s Day, impacting most of Sweden except the far north. Areas including Hälsingland, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Härjedalen, and Jämtland are expected to record between 20 to 30 centimeters of snow, with localized amounts potentially reaching up to 50 centimeters.

Alongside heavy snowfall, strong winds will hit especially the coastal regions of Medelpad and Ångermanland, escalating the severity of travel conditions. An orange weather warning has already been issued for Gotland, signaling potentially dangerous weather scenarios. Temperatures are forecasted to plummet significantly during this period, with northern Norrland possibly experiencing temperatures below -30 degrees Celsius.

SMHI advises travelers to stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings due to the anticipated difficult travel conditions caused by snow accumulation and gusty winds. The combination of extreme cold, heavy snowfall, and strong winds could cause disruptions and hazards, particularly on New Year’s Day and into the weekend.
