Sweden is grappling with extensive disruptions to its public and train transport networks on January 7, 2026, due to a severe snowstorm coupled with extreme cold across the country. The snowstorm, which brought up to 40 centimeters of snow particularly in Västsverige, has led to an orange weather warning issued by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). Public transport in Gothenburg has been hit hard, with many tram and bus lines suspended. Kristian Lans, spokesperson for Västtrafik, confirmed that traffic is severely affected there, especially in central Gothenburg, urging travelers to seek alternatives and expect delays.

Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, raised its preparedness level to 2 to allow for deployment of extra resources to manage the crisis. Spokesperson Katarina Wolffram noted that this is a necessary step to handle the heavy snow clean-up and maintain safety.

Train services nationwide have faced cancellations and reductions. In Stockholm, significant disruptions impact commuter trains, specifically lines 41 and 43, alongside numerous cancellations on routes extending to and from the capital. Meanwhile, western and central regions including Östergötland are operating trains at reduced capacities to facilitate snow and ice removal on tracks.

In northern Sweden, severe cold weather complicates the situation. Temperatures between -20 and -42 degrees Celsius have forced companies like X-trafik and Norrtåg to cancel most services between key points such as Gävle to Sundsvall and Kiruna to Luleå. Yellow warnings for snowfall remain active in northwest Götaland, southwest Svealand, Dalarna, and southeastern Norrland.
