Severe Flooding and Heavy Rainfall Impact Norrbotten with Emergency Services Under Pressure

Eastern Norrbotten is currently facing significant flooding due to prolonged heavy rainfall, prompting an orange weather warning from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). This warning, which signals high water flows and flood risks, is in effect from Boden to Jokkmokk, while yellow warnings apply to surrounding areas including Luleå and Kalix.

The continuous rain has saturated the ground, causing rivers and streams to swell to unprecedented levels. Local farmer Johan Risberg shared that hay bales were seen floating away in the Ljusån river, requiring a friend to retrieve them by ATV. In Boden, emergency services are overwhelmed, having requested additional resources to handle the flooding. Rescue chief Magnus Nilsson, with 26 years of experience, noted this as the highest water level he has seen, even exceeding levels typically observed during snowmelt.

Meteorologist Henrik Reimer indicated that the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease by the following day, but some showers may continue over the weekend. Despite this, the immediate situation remains critical for residents and emergency responders in Norrbotten.
