Security Review Initiated After Double Prison Escape in Borås

In the wake of a double escape from the Borås detention center, a sweeping review of security measures across Swedish correctional facilities is underway. The escapees, serving lengthy sentences, managed to utilize construction materials to scale multiple fences, a situation prompting alarm among authorities and calls for immediate action.

Joakim Righammar, the head of security for the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, stated the review will scrutinize several critical areas. These include the management of outdoor areas where inmates have access, the classification and placement of violent offenders, and the oversight of construction projects within the facilities. "We are building a lot and must build a lot, but we need to keep track of our materials so that they cannot be used for escapes," Righammar emphasized, highlighting the importance of vigilance in the face of such incidents.

The escape of the two prisoners, one believed to be a leader of a Gothenburg-based criminal gang, raised significant safety concerns and indicated deep vulnerabilities within the current system. Following their escape, the authorities quickly located the fugitives approximately 20 kilometers from the detention center thanks to tips from the public.

This review isn't limited to Borås; it spans all correctional institutions in Sweden, reflecting a recognized need for heightened security measures. Key focuses will include increasing staff levels and developing more stringent oversight of areas where escapes could occur.
