Search Continues for Missing Woman and Child After Boat Collision Near Marstrand

A woman in her 40s and a child remain missing after a recreational boat collided with a Norwegian freighter off the coast near Marstrand, Sweden. The accident took place Tuesday evening near Lövön and Tjörn, involving four people aboard the recreational boat—a man and woman in their 40s, and two children. Two individuals, including one child, were rescued and hospitalized with serious injuries.

Rescue operations have been extensive, involving the Swedish Maritime Administration, police, coast guard, ambulances, drones, and helicopter searches. An area of approximately 30 square kilometers is being scanned, with wreckage like clothing and cushions found at the scene.

The accident sparked a preliminary investigation into potential negligence in maritime traffic. Authorities have halted the involved cargo ship, the Norwegian freighter Misje Verde, for technical examinations and questioning. No charges have been filed yet.

Local resident Clas Darvik described the incident as "frightening," citing the heavy maritime traffic and poor weather conditions, including rain and strong winds that limited nighttime visibility and delayed search efforts. Operations paused overnight were resumed Wednesday morning to enhance coverage by air.

Roald Misje, CEO of the shipping company, said the crew was unaware of any collision until contacted by the Coast Guard and expressed hope for the safe recovery of the missing people. Niclas Härenstam, communications director at the Maritime Administration, confirmed that the sunken boat wreckage was found and that search efforts continue.
