SAS Launches Major Aircraft Purchase Plan, Creating 4,000 Jobs in Southern Sweden

Scandinavian airline SAS has unveiled an ambitious five-year aircraft procurement plan involving the acquisition of 40 new aircraft, marking one of the most significant investments in the company’s history. The investment, estimated at nearly 100 billion SEK, is poised to substantially expand SAS’s operations and generate approximately 4,000 new jobs in southern Sweden by 2030.

CEO Anko van der Werff announced the plan at a press conference, emphasizing, “We are investing in the future today,” highlighting the strategic importance of this initiative. The new fleet will primarily consist of Airbus A330-900-neo and A330-300 models, enhancing SAS’s long-haul capabilities.

Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport has been designated SAS’s main hub, strengthening connectivity for Scandinavia. New flight routes are expected to be introduced from Copenhagen as well as from Oslo and Stockholm, although specific destinations remain undisclosed.

This expansion follows significant corporate restructuring, with Air France-KLM acquiring a majority stake in SAS after the airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The restructuring ended Swedish government ownership, positioning SAS for renewed growth and competitiveness in the aviation sector.

Bloomberg had earlier speculated a smaller order of 15 to 20 aircraft, but the finalized purchase of 40 planes surpasses those expectations, reflecting SAS’s confidence in growing demand.

The comprehensive plan not only expands SAS’s fleet but also signals a strategic effort to bolster Scandinavia’s air connectivity and economic prospects, particularly via job creation in southern Sweden.
