Russian Fighter Jets Approach Swedish Borders near Stockholm and Karlskrona, Prompting Military Interception

On June 16, 2026, Russian Su-24 and Su-34 fighter jets flew close to Swedish territorial waters in the Baltic Sea, near Stockholm and Karlskrona, before turning back following radio warnings from Swedish military aircraft. The incidents involved two separate flights: one east of Landsort in the Stockholm archipelago and another near Karlskrona in Ronneby, Hanöbukten in Blekinge. The Russian jets approached just a few hundred meters from the Swedish border but aborted their course after being intercepted.

The Swedish Armed Forces confirmed the events and described them as significant military maneuvers. Swedish operations chief Ewa Skoog Haslum noted that the flights were unusual in their timing and proximity to Sweden and recommended interpreting them as potential tests of Sweden’s military preparedness.

In response, the Swedish Air Force deployed Gripen fighter jets to conduct two interception operations. These Gripen aircraft issued radio warnings to the Russian jets, prompting them to change course and avoid entering Swedish airspace.

The Swedish military views these incursions within the context of increased Russian military activity in the region, particularly as NATO conducts exercises such as Baltops and Ramstein Flag. The pattern of Russian naval and aerial maneuvers close to Swedish and NATO territories indicates multiple strategic objectives behind these actions.
