As Black Friday 2026 approaches in Sweden, a recent analysis reveals numerous products have seen significant price increases just before the shopping event, raising concerns about deceptive discount strategies. A study by Prisjakt examining half a million online products found that nearly 30% experienced price hikes in October, with more than 14% rising by at least 10%. Notable spikes appeared in product categories including televisions, jackets, computers, game consoles, and perfumes.
Consumer expert Isabella Ahmadi from Prisjakt highlighted these surges as possible tactics by retailers to inflate prices beforehand, making Black Friday discounts appear more attractive than they truly are. Since a 2022 law mandates that retailers disclose the lowest price of a product in the past 30 days when advertising discounts, some sellers circumvent this by raising prices just before the 30-day window starts, as noted by Consumer Agency lawyer Anton Mattsson.
Last year, 39% of retailers audited violated this price information law, often failing to provide accurate price comparisons. Mattsson advises shoppers to utilize price comparison websites like Pricerunner and Prisbot.se to verify deal authenticity. The growing prevalence of such manipulations underscores the importance of consumer vigilance to avoid falling for misleading Black Friday offers.
