Preem's Redefine HVO100 Becomes First Liquid Fuel to Achieve Svanen Certification

Preem's Redefine HVO100 fuel has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first liquid fuel to receive the Svanen environmental certification, a label recognized by 97% of the Nordic population. This certification is particularly noteworthy as it aligns with the new criteria introduced in 2022, which stipulate that greenhouse gas emissions be at least 75% lower than traditional fossil fuels. The HVO100 fuel is created using waste materials such as tall oil, animal fats, and food waste, allowing it to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 90% compared to conventional diesel.

Anna Linusson, the CEO of Miljömärkning Sverige, emphasized that the Svanen certification process is rigorous. It requires comprehensive documentation and stringent compliance checks, which can take anywhere from one month to two years to complete, depending on the product. Linusson highlighted the ongoing importance of consumer choices in promoting sustainability, stating that this certification simplifies the selection of environmentally friendly products for consumers.

Preem's HVO100 is compatible with most diesel engines and does not require any modifications. The certification excludes the use of unsustainable raw materials like palm oil, reinforcing the focus on environmental integrity throughout the production process.

With the introduction of this certification, there is hope among industry leaders that it will spur an increase in sales of certified products and motivate other companies to adopt similar sustainability standards. The successful certification of HVO100 is seen as a crucial step toward advancing environmental practices across the industry, further pushing the boundaries of sustainability in fuel production.
