Political Dispute Delays Decision on Kristvallabrunns School Closure in Nybro

The proposed closure of Kristvallabrunns school in Nybro municipality has ignited significant political controversy and community protests, leading to the postponement of a final decision until after the 2026 municipal elections.

The governing majority, formed by the Social Democrats and the Center Party, proposed closing several rural schools, highlighting Kristvallabrunns as a key candidate. This proposal, officially presented in January 2026, met with strong opposition from affected families and political parties. Local councilor Tobias Fagergård (S) described such school closure decisions as among the most difficult for local politicians.

Currently, Kristvallabrunns skola serves 24 students from preschool to sixth grade. Parent Linnea Josefsson Toft voiced concerns about the school’s future, underscoring its importance as an election issue. The local government has delayed the decision to allow for further assessments, including child impact evaluations and revised cost calculations. At present, five competing political proposals differ on which schools to keep or close.

Opposition parties—the Moderates, Christian Democrats, and Liberals—favor retaining Kristvallabrunns while closing others, whereas the Sweden Democrats support keeping all schools pending further review. This political disagreement reflects the broader community’s uncertainty and contention over rural education policy in Nybro ahead of the elections.
