Parts of Uppsala University's Ekonomikum Closed Amid Bedbug Scare

Parts of the Ekonomikum section at Uppsala University have been closed as a precaution after reports of bedbugs surfaced. The closure affects an area of a couple of hundred square meters, including the basement study space known as Tryckeriet, equipped with sofas and armchairs. This followed a report from a concerned student who experienced itchy bites suspected to be from bedbugs. Ann-Kristin Lindberg, chief safety representative at Ekonomikum, confirmed the closure and noted that an extermination company is scheduled to investigate the area.

The university's decision is precautionary while investigations determine whether bedbugs are indeed present. This incident follows a similar bedbug infestation at Filmstaden Luxe, a cinema in Uppsala that has been closed since October and is undergoing extensive sanitation, with plans to reopen in January 2026.

The university is taking these measures to ensure the safety of students and staff, reflecting ongoing concerns about bedbug infestations in Uppsala. The investigation at Ekonomikum will clarify the extent of the issue and the next steps for remediation.
