Over 50,000 Rally in Stockholm Climate March Urging Stronger Political Action

On Sunday, Stockholm witnessed one of its largest climate demonstrations ever, as over 50,000 participants gathered to demand urgent and robust political measures to combat climate change. Organized by more than 280 groups including Naturskyddsföreningen, Rebellmammorna, and Rebellpapporna, the march carried the unifying slogan "Enade för klimatet" (United for the Climate).

The event began at Vasaparken and culminated at Gustav Adolfs torg, where demonstrators held banners advocating forest protection, adherence to the Paris Agreement, and a pressing call for a revised and effective climate policy. Organizers maintained a politically neutral stance by prohibiting party symbols and national flags to focus on collective responsibility.

Among the speakers was Greta Thunberg, who sharply criticized the Swedish government for insufficient climate efforts, emphasizing the need for immediate political leadership. Maria Gunnarsson from Nyköping highlighted the importance of collective political action rather than leaving climate responsibility solely to individuals. Therese Svanström, president of Tjänstemännens centralorganisation (TCO), also noted that the political sphere has underestimated the scale of public engagement on climate issues.

The peaceful march reportedly caused traffic disruptions but no incidents. Groups such as the Swedish Church, Greenpeace, and various labor unions joined the rally, marking a powerful and diverse show of solidarity in Stockholm for the climate cause.

The demonstration underscored a broad public demand for prompt, sustainable climate policies, sending a clear signal to politicians that the time for decisive action is now.
