OSCE Declines to Send Election Observers to Sweden for 2026 Polls

The OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has announced it will not send election observers to Sweden's 2026 parliamentary, regional, and municipal elections. This decision followed a Needs Assessment Mission carried out by OSCE representatives from May 5 to 7, during which they met with election authorities, political parties, and media. Officials expressed strong confidence in Sweden's electoral system and the Swedish Election Authority’s capacity to run the elections professionally, impartially, and transparently. As a result, ODIHR concluded that a formal observation mission was unnecessary.

Despite the OSCE's decision, nine organizations have applied for and received accreditation to observe the elections as of July 22. Although accreditation is not mandatory for election observation in Sweden, a new process was introduced following a legislative change effective December 1, 2025, to facilitate observer activities. Anna Nyqvist, Secretary General of the Swedish Election Authority, emphasized that Swedish elections are open to observation by anyone, and the accreditation system aims to support observers' work.

This development underscores the high trust in Sweden’s electoral integrity and highlights the country's openness to diverse observation efforts, even as OSCE steps back from deploying official observers.
