Opposition Criticizes Prime Minister Kristersson for Prioritizing Sweden Democrats Amid Security Concerns

Socialdemokraterna leader Magdalena Andersson has accused Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of placing the Sweden Democrats (SD) party’s interests above those of Sweden, following revelations of alleged Russian influence involving SD officials. Speaking in Bredäng, Stockholm, Andersson described the situation as a "serious security crisis" due to reports that a female SD staff member with ties to Russia has been disseminating pro-Russian narratives for over a decade.

This staff member, who moved to Sweden from Russia in 2006 and is currently on parental leave, is in a relationship with Gustav Gellerbrant, a senior SD figure within the government. Reports indicate she promoted articles and posts aligned with Russian state propaganda, including praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In response to the controversy, Peter Hultqvist, chair of the defense committee, called for Prime Minister Kristersson to attend an extraordinary committee meeting to address the matter—an invitation Kristersson has rejected. Hultqvist also urged for an investigation by Säpo (the Swedish Security Service) and the suspension of Gellerbrant due to the security implications.

Andersson demanded that Kristersson clarify what measures he intends to implement to protect Swedish national interests in light of these developments. The controversy underscores concerns about the security risks associated with the SD party’s involvement in government, especially given their officials’ apparent links to Russian influence.

The opposition’s outcry highlights heightened fears over national security as Sweden navigates complex geopolitical challenges.
