One Year After the Risbergska School Shooting: Community Remembers and Reflects

February 4, 2026, marked the somber one-year anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at Risbergska School in Örebro, Sweden, where ten lives were lost. The day was observed with a series of commemorative events that brought together survivors, educators, political leaders, and the community to honor the victims and reflect on the enduring impact of the tragedy.

The day at Risbergska began with regular classes, followed by a memorial service that emphasized resilience among students and staff. Principal Mattias Molin recalled the moment the shooting began, initially mistaking the gunfire for a dropped locker before the panic set in. Along with a colleague, he sheltered in a room for hours until help arrived. Although the school environment has been physically renovated, the memories of that day remain deeply present.

Teacher Eva Berzelius shared her harrowing experience of barricading herself with four students during the attack. She described the overwhelming fear, the unmistakable smell of smoke grenades, and the traumatic reality of being trapped. Returning to work shortly after the incident was an immense challenge; she highlighted the need for long-term trauma support and better crisis management informed by survivors' experiences.

In the evening, hundreds gathered at Örebro Castle for a memorial ceremony featuring speeches and music.
