Norwegian Cargo Ship Captain Detained Following Fatal Tjörn Boat Collision

The captain of a Norwegian cargo ship, Misje Verde, has been detained on suspicion of causing the deaths of two people in a tragic boat collision near Tjörn on July 28, 2026. The accident involved the 90-meter cargo ship and a smaller recreational boat, which was struck and almost run over, causing it to capsize in Hakefjorden. Two victims, a mother and her daughter, died, while a man and another child were injured and hospitalized in stable condition.

The detention hearing took place at Gothenburg District Court, where the captain denied any wrongdoing and responsibility, according to his defense lawyer Taavi Tuula. The prosecutor argued for detention on grounds of flight risk since the captain does not reside in Sweden or any Nordic or EU country. There is also concern about potential witness interference. Senior prosecutor James von Reis highlighted these points during the proceedings.

The cargo ship had a Swedish pilot on board and was traveling south from Uddevalla into open waters when the accident occurred. The shipping company noted the captain did not notice the collision when it happened. An indictment is expected by August 14 as investigations progress.
