New Wave in Swedish Politics: Norrlandspartiet’s Rise and Moderaterna’s Unique Majority in Staffanstorp

The 2026 local elections in Sweden have unveiled significant shifts in the political landscape, highlighted by the remarkable rise of the new Norrlandspartiet in Västernorrland and the Moderaterna party’s historic majority win in Staffanstorp.

Norrlandspartiet, founded in December 2025, has quickly become Sweden’s largest new party by entering all seven municipalities and the regional council in Västernorrland. The party’s breakthrough was especially notable in Kramfors, where it secured nearly 25% of the vote, challenging the long-standing Socialdemokraterna stronghold in Ådalen. Sofie Böhlin, a former Centerpartiet supporter, switched allegiance due to dissatisfaction with local governance and the lack of transparency and investments in the region despite its economic contributions through tourism. The party’s agenda centers on attaining regional self-governance inspired by models like those of Scotland and Åland, improving healthcare with demands for three acute hospitals, and enhancing local resources. Led by figures including former Socialdemokraterna member Peyman Vahedi, Norrlandspartiet plans to expand its influence beyond Västernorrland and aims to contest national elections by 2034.

In contrast, Staffanstorp saw the Moderaterna party achieve its first majority in years, securing 52.55% of the vote. Christian Sonesson, the party leader there, attributed the success to effective governance and direct communication with constituents, highlighting the importance of accessibility and political content. He emphasized the necessity for dialogue with other parties, especially Sverigedemokraterna, despite not pursuing national political ambitions. The elections also underscored a trend of voters splitting their votes between local and national ballots, indicating evolving voter behavior. Meanwhile, Socialdemokraterna maintained strong positions in other municipalities such as Smedjebacken and Munkfors.

Political analyst Johan Wänström noted that achieving majorities like Staffanstorp’s is increasingly challenging due to the fragmented party landscape. These developments illustrate fresh regional political dynamics, with emergent parties addressing localized concerns and established parties navigating new voter expectations.
