New Sensor Technology Significantly Enhances Safety at Slottet Dementia Care Facility in Falun

The Slottet dementia care facility in Britsarvet, Falun, has implemented innovative sensor and alarm technologies that are markedly improving safety for both residents and staff. These technological advancements have led to measurable reductions in fall accidents and false alarms, while enabling more efficient monitoring by staff members.

The new system utilizes wall-mounted sensors customized to residents' individual needs, particularly those at high risk of falling. These sensors alert staff immediately to unusual activities, such as when a resident sits up in bed, helping to prevent accidents. Digital supervision is enabled through mobile phones, which display an image of the triggered incident for one minute to assist staff in assessing the situation promptly.

According to reports, the number of alarms across all departments has decreased by one third, and registered fall accidents have dropped by 20%, with incidents halved specifically for high-risk individuals. Staff members, including nursing assistants Ehsan Rezai and Amir Ghorbani, noted that while some false alarms remain, their frequency has been greatly reduced compared to prior systems where even minor movements like a fallen blanket could trigger alarms.

Falu municipality is backing this safety initiative by allocating 10 million SEK to install similar sensor technology in additional elderly care homes by autumn 2026. This investment aims not only to improve residents' safety but also to enhance the working environment for care staff.
