New Malmö Clinic Addresses Healthcare Gaps for Hereditary Cancer Patients in Skåne

A new clinic in Malmö has opened to provide specialized care for patients in Skåne with hereditary cancer risks, aiming to improve early detection, prevention, and patient support. The clinic consolidates care for hereditary cancers, including breast, ovarian, and colorectal types, welcoming both healthy genetic mutation carriers and cancer survivors. Chief Physician Marie Stenmark Askmalm highlighted that hereditary cancers often affect younger patients, sometimes up to 20 years earlier than typical cases, underscoring the need for coordinated care.

Previously, patients faced fragmented healthcare experiences, as demonstrated by Mia and her sister Anette, who suffer from the same hereditary disease but had vastly different healthcare journeys. Anette received consistent, secure care, while Mia struggled for appropriate help until recently finding relief at the new Malmö clinic. Mia expressed her hope to live as long as possible thanks to the improved support.

The clinic aims to streamline patient monitoring by ensuring continuity with the same healthcare providers, reducing the stress linked to managing lifelong cancer risks across multiple healthcare units. This comprehensive approach not only enhances patients' quality of life but also facilitates research to better understand and plan treatment for this vulnerable group. As Stenmark Askmalm remarked, healthcare must balance treating acute disease with proactive wellness promotion, especially for those at lifelong risk of multiple cancers.
