New Digital Technology Cuts Water Waste at Swedish Camping Sites

A pilot project introducing digital water consumption monitoring is underway at camping sites in Mora, Helsingborg, and Öland to enhance sustainability by minimizing water waste. The system delivers real-time, minute-by-minute updates on water flow, allowing staff to quickly identify and address leaks, which has traditionally been a slow process reliant on monthly manual meter readings. Victoria Verdes, destination manager at Råå Vallar First Camp in Helsingborg, highlighted that this innovative solution significantly improves operational control over water use. Campground guests actively participate by reporting leaks to staff, further aiding water conservation efforts.

Campers themselves are more conscious of their water consumption compared to urban residents, according to year-round camper Miranda Runne, who pointed out the practical and environmental necessity of mindful water use when camping. Camper Per Lund stressed the importance of reducing water consumption, especially during shortages, to avoid steep bills. The technology is seen as a critical step towards fostering sustainability in Sweden's outdoor recreational spaces, ensuring water resources are utilized efficiently.
