New Cultural Initiative Fosters Safe Spaces for HBTQI Seniors in Skärholmen

Skärholmen's municipal administration has launched a new cultural initiative to create safe and inclusive meeting spaces for HBTQI seniors aged 65 and older. Yaowapa Karlsson, an 'äldrefältare' and business developer involved in the project, aims to reduce loneliness and encourage participation among older HBTQI individuals through dialogue and community events. According to Karlsson, many seniors appreciate the city's recognition of their community, though some approach the initiative cautiously due to past experiences of marginalization.

The program acknowledges the multicultural nature of Skärholmen, noting that older individuals from immigrant backgrounds often face complex cultural and generational dynamics related to sexuality. The initiative underscores how HBTQI identities can coexist with cultural identities, emphasizing shared experiences of courage and the desire for connection.

Promotion efforts include advertising in local press and collaboration with organizations such as RFSL and other HBTQI networks. The first event, scheduled for October 16, features a lecture by author Mian Lodalen on "Forbidden Love in Stockholm during the 20th Century." Additional planned activities include a November afternoon tea with live music and a festive December gathering, all offered free of charge as part of the city's long-term commitment to fostering safe and inclusive social spaces for seniors.
