Two sports movement representatives from Sweden are urging municipalities to increase financial and infrastructural support for local sports associations, citing substantial benefits to health, community cohesion, and economic returns. Highlighting the positive impacts of sports participation — including joy, belonging, personal development, and well-being across all age groups — the authors argue that supporting sports is directly linked to addressing societal challenges such as physical and mental health problems caused by sedentary lifestyles and loneliness, as well as insecurity related to segregation and exclusion.

They point out that in Västra Götaland one in four sports associations face shortages of adequate space or access to facilities and require renovations. The authors emphasize the significant contribution of volunteers, noting that in the Sjuhärad region alone volunteer leaders contribute work valued at over 483 million kronor annually, equivalent to nearly 1,000 leisure leader salaries.
