Multiple Traffic Accidents in Västra Götaland Due to Hazardous Black Ice

On the morning of October 18, 2025, Västra Götaland, Sweden, faced dangerous driving conditions caused by black ice (blixthalka), leading to multiple traffic accidents across the region. Authorities including Trafikverket and local police have issued warnings advising motorists to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and maintain safe distances on the roads. The slippery conditions were caused by a combination of clearing weather and wet surfaces freezing overnight, compounded by thick fog in some areas.

Accidents were reported in key locations including Borås, Ulricehamn, and on major roads such as the E6 in Kungälv, E45, and E20. One eyewitness, Linus Olsson, described roads near Kungälv as “snorhalt” (extremely slippery) following a single-vehicle incident that escalated into a multi-car pileup.
